Do Nicotine Replacement Therapies Really Work - Part 2

fountain at nightFour transdurmal nicotine patches, which signifies that the medication can be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream, were approved by the FDA in 1991 and 1992. These have become popular ways to quit smoking.

Two of these became available over-the-counter in 1996. These patches meet the needs of many smokers, due to them transferring nicotine through the skin.

Remember that in part one of this series I said that even though the word "nicotine replacement" sounds harmful, these devices are much less harmful to the body than one cigarette. Cigarettes have hundreds of harmful chemicals in them, making nicotine replacement therapies a healthy choice.

It is indicated in data that has been taken from the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry, that over one million users have been successful in their treatment for nicotine addiction when using nicotine gum or transdurmal patches. In 1996, a nicotine nasal spray became available by prescription, and in 1998 a nicotine inhaler was introduced.

All products used for nicotine replacement seem to be equally effective. In reality, over-the-counter products combined with numerous campaigns by the media designed to urge people to stop smoking have produced an increase of approximately 20% in the number of people who have successfully quit each year.

Whilst the approval of a nicotine tablet that can be dissolved under the tongue is awaited by doctors, the concern is being voiced by researches as to the long-term physical effects of nicotine replacement therapies.

Certain smokers choose to use nicotine replacement products for longer periods of time that are in actual fact intended for the particular products. There is evidence that unwelcome side effects can be experienced when using them long-term, because they are so readily available without a doctor’s prescription.
